Inspired by Homeric Hymn to Artemis
By Sophie Mayer (b. 1978)

You make a good shadow, says Fox.

She’s the goddess of what no longer exists,
the myth of the source,
the clean gulp, the enfilade
leading into the cave
and out. She is there, that
moment in the centre
when the walls fall away and your hands
find themselves in prayer, blades of a labrys
folding closed, this life and its mirror.
